Something happens – I react. Something happens – I react! Something happens – I react!!

Your client has a medical symptom, but physicians have ruled out a medical cause. Functional Neurological Syndrome – or Conversion – disorders are a standard diagnosis, but there is no standard treatment.
We’ve been dealing with FNSD for a long time. In 1777, Franz Anton Mesmer cured Maria Theresia von Paradis, courtier of Empress Maria Theresa, of her blindness – this began the modern age of hypnosis. In 1882 Jean-Martin Charcot, the father of neurology, presented his findings relating hypnosis and hysteria to the Académie des Sciences, marking a significant moment in the scientific recognition of hypnosis.
Good news: hypnosis is a great neurological fit for treating FNSD. More interesting: Rapid hypnotic induction actually helps! We will explore how hypnosis works in the brain, how this relates to specific treatments, and how to perform and use rapid induction in your practice. The presentation will focus on practical demonstrations of the process.

Victory Over Trauma: Solution-Focused Regression

Dr. Mau will present a one hour lecture.

This hands-on workshop will demonstrate a simple approach to regression that can work within a one hour client session. Instead of retraumatizing your client by having them repeat the destructive narratives and details of the past, this process centers on the reframing the destructive emotions in a practical and beautiful way that you can use with your clients as soon as you get home. Dr. Mau will also describe the neurological link between high hypnotizability and posttraumatic responses, which makes hypnosis a perfect approach to treating trauma.

Epigenetics: Nurture, Nature, Change, and Hope

Nurture wins so hard it tells nature what to do – for a long time we knew about inheritance via genes and memes, but 2004 marked the discovery of another way to inherit, and understanding how this works can give your clients a real sense of hope.

Behaviors and emotional orientation can be physically inherited. This soft inheritance is not via genetic changes; epigenetics refers to heritable chemical modifications to DNA that alter gene activity without changing nucleotide sequence. Your clients may believe that they have inherited a family curse like trauma or addiction. The good news that, unlike genetic inheritance, epigenetic inheritances are not destiny can be changed. We will review the current state of behavioral epigenetics with a focus on ways to help and encourage your clients as they create change.

The Three Doors: a Protocol for Anxiety

Friday, May 29, 2026, live in Columbia SC or virtual. 9:00 to 12:00 EDT Columbia and New York, 14:00 BST London, 15:00 CEST Europe

Something happens – I react. Something happens – I react! Something happens – I react!!

The reactions feel unconscious, automatic, out of control. I try to not do it, and it happens. Even if I know it does not make sense.

Instead of symptom management – what if we could change experience? Do something that shifts things at a neurological level in the brain so that the solution also feels unconscious and automatic? The Three Doors process does just that! There are fundamental neurological reasons that make hypnotherapy a perfect treatment for any behavior that is driven by anxiety. If self discipline is not solving things, this is the way to go.

Whether you are new to hypnosis and just curious, or a seasoned practitioner who would like a fantastic new tool in your toolbox, you will enjoy this training!

“I recently attended The Three Doors: A Protocol for Anxiety training with Dr. Mau and was very impressed. The small group format made the experience very interactive and allowed plenty of time for discussion and questions. I have practiced hypnotherapy for years, and I was genuinely surprised by how much I learned in just three hours—honestly more than I have learned during some multi-day conference trainings. Dr. Mau provided excellent feedback and answered questions thoroughly throughout the training. What I especially appreciated is that this protocol is not only helpful for anxiety, but can be applied to a wide range of issues that are bothersome or distressing to clients. I would highly recommend this training to clinicians looking for practical tools they can immediately use in their practice.”

Up, Up, and Away! Hyperemperia – Not Hypnosis!

Dr. Mau will present a two hour workshop.

“Trance” describes a relaxed, dissociative state. But it also refers to the dissociation that goes with ecstatic dance! What if we go for greater emotional engagement – ramping everything up, instead of relaxing someone down? Hyperemperia looks like hypnosis, but there are no suggestions of relaxation, just heading up, up and away like Superman!

Depersonalization and derealization are mental disorders that involve a persistent feeling of detachment from your Self, your own body, or your surroundings, making the world seem unreal, strange, or dreamlike. Clinical depression can result in a dimming of sensory perception – recovering clients describe things like colors seeming brighter, sounds are clearer, and foods taste better. Hypnosis involves relaxation from Beta awareness to a Theta state, but hyperemperia goes the other way, creating more engagement up up into Gamma and ramping up sensory perception!

Quick Fun for Building your Practice

The Neurology of Horror: Why Hypnosis is the Perfect Treatment for Trauma

Dr. Mau will give a one hour presentation (CEs are available for the conference).

Clinical posttraumatic responses create deep and visceral body experiences: intrusive thoughts, distressing dreams, dissociative reactions, intense psychological and physiological distress – from hypervigilance to depersonalization and derealization. And not just PTSD – the personality disorders are largely associated with trauma. Both susceptibility to posttraumatic responses and high hypnotizability involve a functionally more effective frontal-limbic system in the brain. Hypnotherapy uses the same brain functionality which created the posttraumatic responses to eliminate them. While most of our approaches to therapy are about symptom management, the goal of hypnotherapy is to change the client’s experience and eradicate the symptoms.

The Neurology and Nature of Hypnosis

Dr. Mau will give a 1:15 minute presentation (1.5 CEs available for a $25 fee).

Hypnotherapy is the oldest Western conceptualization of psychotherapy. Modern neuroimaging shows exactly how the process works, and allows us to align it with specific DSM-5-TR diagnoses. This evidence-based therapy is excellent for treating posttraumatic, anxiety, dissociative, and somatic symptom disorders. Since 2019 it has been considered a best practice for physical pain relief. The workshop will include demonstrations of kyphotic processes, and a discussion of the neurology and nature of hypnosis.

clinical practice

We have reached the point where neurological studies can indicate more effective means of therapy. Modern neuroimaging has shown exactly how hypnosis operates in the brain, and surprisingly this allows us to relate this treatment to specific diagnoses. While cognitive therapies tend to seek symptom management, hypnosis is about fundamentally altering experience, frequently with a goal of eliminating symptoms. This process is solution-focused, brief, and based on emotional rather than cognitive change. It is a standard of care process, not complimentary or alternative. Generally hypnosis is effective for posttraumatic disorders, anxiety and related disorders (such as tics and phobias), somatic symptom and functional neurological disorders, dissociative disorders and unipolar depression, as well as physical pain relief.

Hypnosis for Pain Relief: Practical, Ethical, Neurologically Powerful

Hypnosis to relieve physical pain is considered to be a medical best practice (not just a standard of care treatment) in the United States. It is arguably the most effective use of hypnosis. If your client suffers ongoing pain it will make any other issues they are facing worse. Hypnotic pain relief is so powerful that in clinical studies it is effective for even low-suggestible clients. Opioid blockers can block acupuncture- or placebo-based relief, but not hypnotic pain relief. Dr. Mau will demonstrate practical techniques you can use immediately with your clients and describe the neurological basis of pain relief. Hypnosis is a best practice – not complimentary or alternative – treatment for physical pain which can be safely and ethically administered by consulting hypnotists. You can understand it and do it!

Hypnosis is the oldest Western conception of psychotherapy. Relieving Physical Pain: Ethics and Practice

If you are familiar with guided imagery you can help your clients eliminate the experience of physical pain. Physical pain is debilitating, often creates cooccurring depression, and generally worsens other mental health and medical problems. Since 2019 the US Department of Health and Human Services has listed hypnotherapy and relaxation training not just as standard of care processes for physical pain relief, but as best practices. While most approaches to psychotherapy can help clients manage the experience of pain, a small group of psychophysiological therapies can actually eliminate the experience of pain. It is important to understand the ethical use of and neurological basis for these evidence-based processes. This hands-on workshop will demonstrate practical processes you can use immediately with your clients.

Brief Trauma Treatment: Solution-Focused Hypnotic Regression

There is a strong neurological and genetic link between susceptibility to clinical posttraumatic responses and high hypnotizability. Hypnotic regression offers a very brief, effective, evidence-based process to significantly alter intrusive, avoidance, mood, reactivity, and depersonalization and derealization symptoms which cause significant distress or functional impairment. Instead of retraumatizing your client by having them repeat the destructive narratives and details of the past, this structured procedure centers on the reframing the destructive emotions in a practical and beautiful way that you can use with your clients.

Don’t you want to do something more effective than teaching coping skills?

The goal of therapy using hypnosis is not to help clients manage symptoms more effectively, but to change their experience and eliminate the symptoms. The process neurologically aligns with trauma and stressor related disorders, anxiety and related disorders including unipolar depression, dissociative disorders, and somatic symptom disorders including functional neurological syndrome. It is recommended as a standard of care and best practice by the Department of Health and Human Services since 2019 for treatment of physical pain, and has been strongly recommended by the National Institutes of Health since 1995 to treat sleep disorders.

Just as these mental health issues feel out of control, hypnotherapy changes feel automatic, like something that is happening, not something the client is doing. Insights feel like realization, not decision. This is a solution-focused process designed to engage your client’s creativity and build practical self-efficacy. Do something different.

The course provides a solid neurological and genetic basis for hypnotherapy and its alignment with specific diagnoses. The goal of the course is to help you develop practical skills so you can actually do these processes with your clients to help them.

Family history, culture tales, religious narratives, racial sagas, political fables, national stories – without even being aware of it we live our lives and find our meaning in the context of stories and narratives. A random word said by a parent or teacher, expectations by a partner, things we don’t even recall consciously, all these things create meaning in our lives. Even the Self is a story you are constantly telling yourself about who you are as a person. “The spoken word, so soon forgot By thee; but it has perished not; In other hearts ’tis living still; And doing work for good or ill.” It is time to own your own narrative, to create your best story, and your best life.

TWO Three-Day Workshops – Hypnosis for Pain Relief: Practical, Ethical, Neurologically Powerful

Dr. Mau will present two three-day intensive workshops live in English in Germany (live translation provided into German).

Physical pain relief may be the most effective use of hypnosis, and provides a tremendous benefit for your clients. Hypnosis is recognized in the United States not only as a medical standard-of-care therapy, but also as a best practice for nonpharmacological pain relief. The neurology of hypnotic pain relief is now well understood via neuroimaging. Dr. Fredric Mau has taught hypnotic pain relief for years to physicians, medical and mental health professionals, and clinical hypnotists. His two day workshop provides you with a neurological understanding of how hypnosis operates in the brain to eliminate the experience of physical pain, as well as practical techniques you can use with your clients to help them. The workshop focuses on developing practical skills you can use immediately in your practice to help your clients. Physical pain also makes all other medical and mental health issues more difficult, so this is a substantial benefit even for clients who come to you for other purposes.

The workshop will include a demonstration, and is focused on giving you practical skills for your first session which will lay the foundation for your client’s success. Most of the 400ish approaches to psychotherapy are problem-focused – the general idea is that insight into where  problems came from somehow helps. How it helps is a little vague. Milton Erickson laid the foundation for solution-focused therapies with his realization that insight is not necessary for change. Solution-focused hypnosis is a practical and elegant approach that is significantly different from approaches that seek causes or initial events. Break free from listening to the destructive narratives of the past and do something that truly facilitates positive change. Whether you are new to the field or an experienced practitioner, you can also use this perspective to tweak most any approaches you currently use to make them more effective.

The Neurology of Hypnosis

How do we communicate effectively with physicians and medical professionals? For that matter, how do we communicate effectively with people in a world where empirical verification is simply the way people assess life? Can we do things with hypnotherapy which are different, or even better, than the results achieved with cognitive or talk therapies? Do hypnotherapy and cognitive therapies even share the therapeutic goal? Is hypnosis a state? Is there a particular reason why hypnotherapy is uniquely suited to treat trauma and anxiety disorders? How does hypnosis operate in the brain, anyway? Does knowing this help me be more effective with my clients? There are powerful answers!

Dissociative Confusion And The Creation Of Meaning—Sorting Out Hypnosis, Mindfulness, Psychedelics And Such

Dr. Mau presented a one hour seminar.

There seems to be confusion about the distinctions between mindfulness, hypnosis, meditation, and contemplation and about how they are practiced. For example, the use of hypnotic induction in mindfulness exercises occurs with increasing frequency. How should these tools be utilized in clinical practice and what is the current understanding of how they work? Does psilocybin work by inducing a dissociative phenomenon similar to trance?

Superhero Regression—The Active Wiser You

Dr. Mau presented a two hour workshop.

What if the ways we think about hypnotic regression, and the expectations we create for our clients for this process, are really focused backwards when they can be powerfully focused forward? Regression is a fantastic way to address trauma, but does it have to be problem-focused? This fun, substantive, interactive workshop will explore fresh solution-focused approaches to a tried-and-true hypnotic technique, and open your eyes to new ways to engage your client’s active superhero creativity and self-healing.

Gee whiz! Rapid induction is so cool! Looks amazing! Nifty for your stage show. Is it useful for anything in clinical practice? Turns out the answer is Yes! There are client issues that involve physical sensations and behavior – many of which feel out of control, and some of which would count as medical symptoms yet without a medical cause. Rapid induction can be a critical part of your treatment plan to help these clients.

Hypnosis and Trauma

Dr. Mau will present a two hour workshop.

Disembodiment is the direct consequence of trauma. Whether we have survived abuse, or not, we’ve survived something – something we may not even recognize as trauma but which our body holds onto as such. As a result, many of us are somewhat disconnected from our bodies. Dissociation is one form of disembodiment a trauma response where the mind leaves the body in an attempt to keep us alive and to survive the pain of the trauma we’re experiencing. Hypnosis can help clients focus both on the resolution of trauma and the active development and integration of the self of the traumatized person. With hypnosis, we foster and encourage the gift of presence by developing a safe, secure, creative intrapersonal relationship. This workshop will present the process of applying hypnosis in dealing with trauma.

Do We have an Ethical Responsibility to Prevent PTSD?

Dr. Mau will present a one hour lecture.

Behavioral and genetic research now exists which indicates that an inexpensive and currently available genetic test may be able to determine which individuals are more likely to exhibit clinical responses to traumatic events, as well as an increased likelihood to experience chronic pain following injury.
If this can be validated, do we as a society have an ethical responsibility to screen applicants for jobs where trauma is likely (such as the military or first responders)? If so, how should the information be handled? Or do we even have a right to do this? Or liability if we don’t?

A Practical Use for Rapid Induction in Clinical Hypnosis: Functional Neurological Syndrome Disorders

Your client has a medical symptom, but physicians have ruled out a medical cause. Good news: hypnosis is a great neurological fit for treating that. More interesting: Rapid hypnotic induction actually helps! We will explore how hypnosis works in the brain, how this relates to specific treatments, and how to perform and use rapid induction in your practice.

Hypnosis for Pain Relief: Practical, Ethical, Neurologically Powerful

Dr. Mau presented a one hour workshop. Physical pain relief is arguably the most effective use of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a standard of care process in the US – not complimentary or alternative – treatment for physical pain which can be safely and ethically administered by consulting hypnotists. You can understand it and do it!

Matching diagnosis and treatment: The neuroscience of hypnosis and clinical practice

Generally hypnosis is effective for posttraumatic disorders, anxiety and related disorders (such as tics and phobias), functional neurological disorders, and unipolar depression, as well as physical pain relief. Join us for an overview of hypnosis, and what promises to be a lively discussion of the process and treatment! Anyone is welcome to join in. Sorting out Hypnosis, Mindfulness, Psychedelics and Such

Dr. Mau presented a two hour workshop.

And how does dissociation and confusion contribute to change thinking and creating new meanings in your life?

The Client’s Vision: Clarifying, Motivating, Powerful

Dr. Mau presented a one hour lecture.

Using the client’s language to create personalized hypnotic processes from induction to emerging is incredibly powerful. Dr. Fredric Mau is a clinical mental health counselor who also serves on a medical faculty teaching hypnosis to psychiatrists. This workshop focuses on practical experiences with clients, modeled by a recognized master therapist. Whether you are crafting each process individually or heavily tailoring scripts – or you just want to do that, this workshop will make your processes more powerful. From pretalk through the entire process Dr. Mau demonstrates his solid approach to help clients create futures which are healed, bright, healthy, and joyful.

The Use of Hypnosis as a Therapeutic Tool

Dr. Mau presented a two hour seminar at the SC Psychological Association Annual Conference –

Hypnosis is the oldest Western conceptualization of psychotherapy, and is recognized as a standard of care process. Division 30 of the APA is devoted to exchanging scientific information, advancing appropriate teaching and research, and developing high standards for the practice of hypnotherapy. Neuroimaging has opened up our understanding of how dissociative therapeutic processes function, and provides us with a model for aligning these processes with many DSM-5-TR diagnoses. Hypnosis offers a methodology to change client experience and eliminate many symptoms, rather than simply managing these symptoms. Dr. Mau will present an overview of the nature of hypnosis and its uses as in psychotherapy.

Re-Visioning the Past: Solution-Focused Regression and Memory Reconsolidation to Treat Trauma

Problem-focused therapies focus on recalling past experiences to gain insight, however recent literature indicates this is not as therapeutically important as changing the current narratives about past happenings. Memory reconsolidation provides a powerful model to reactivate old memories and engage in new emotional experiences to create a new way of behaving and experiencing the world, and hypnosis is an excellent way to engage this process.

Envisioning the Future: Embracing Solution-Focused Treatment, Planning, and Motivation

Solution-focused therapies provide a distinct approach which is substantively different from both past- oriented therapeutic approaches and psychoeducation. This session is designed to draw a sharp contrast between problem- and solution-focused approaches, with a goal of empowering clients to build motivation for change and to release hypnotherapists from the heavy burden of the past.

Dissociative Confusion and the Creation of Meaning: Sorting out Hypnosis, Mindfulness, Psychedelics and Such

There are questions to be answered – there seems to be confusion about the distinctions between mindfulness, hypnosis, meditation, and contemplation and about how they are practiced. For example, the use of hypnotic induction in mindfulness exercises occurs with increasing frequency. How should these tools be utilized in clinical practice and what is the current understanding of how they work? Does psilocybin work by inducing a dissociative phenomenon similar to hypnosis? Leaving the 19th Century: Contemporary Language and the Neuroscience of Hypnosis

Dr. Mau presented a three and a half hour workshop

Advancements in neuroscience have opened up entirely new ways of understanding the process of hypnosis. A lot of the language we use to understand and describe hypnosis is not wrong, but is imprecise and based on experiential observations from before the advent of neuroimaging. Describing hypnosis using the latest findings and current terminology improves our understanding of our own process, increases our ability to be taken seriously by medical and mental health professionals, and makes our work more effective because it improves our client’s understanding of how our processes help them.

Closing Keynote Address – The Brain Shows the Way

The 2023 UK Hypnosis Convention will be the first time we will offer a closing keynote and it is going to be a regular feature at future events. We asked Dr Fredric Mau to deliver our inaugural closing keynote this year, we are delighted he accepted. Here is how we’ll be rounding things off…..

The Brain Shows the Way
We’ve known it works very efficiently for a long time. There is an entire language wrapped about the experience of hypnosis. The strangeness of the experience has led to stigma. Yet hypnosis is a neurological process that engages the body directly to create epiphany changes. Genetic factors can now tell us who is more likely to benefit from the process, and neuroimaging shows not only how changes are created but what sorts of issues are likely to be healed via our process. It is time to rethink our story and the ways we present what we do to the public, the medical community, and even ourselves. We offer a process for healing that is empirically validated, extremely effective, very fast, and solution focused.
Dr. Fredric Mau is a clinical mental health counselor in the U.S. He also serves as core faculty in a medical residency program teaching hypnosis to psychiatrists. As an investigator in a clinical trial his work has been published in the British Medical Journal.
Dr. Mau encapsulates the spirit of the UK Hypnosis Convention, and we are thrilled he is wrapping up this year’s fantastic conference. He is a regular and very popular presenter at our convention, understands our ethos, reflects our values, and supports our vision. This will be an engaging 30 minutes for Dr. Mau to promote the field and stamp some of his own thoughts and personality upon our closing, and for you to reflect upon the event.”

Epigenetics: Nurture, Nature, Change, and Hope

Dr. Mau presented a two hour workshop.

I’ve presented on epigenetics at the NGH before (2016) – this is a completely updated presentation on the current state of the science.

Physical Pain Relief: Standard of Care Relief You Can Provide

Dr. Mau presented a two hour breakout session.

Chronic physical pain is processed in the same brain regions as psychological pain like depression. Cooccurring chronic pain makes all mental health issues worse. Fortunately, there are a number of standard-of-care behavioral health approaches which can be used by counselors to help clients mitigate or even physical pain. We will consider these, and how they can be used effectively in your practice.

Speechless for Six Months

Dr. Mau presented a one hour seminar.

This is a case study of a 16-year-old client who was unable to speak for six months. You will hear audio recordings of the client as she recovers her voice within one hypnosis session. In this practical session, Dr. Mau will describe the techniques used as well as the rationale for his approach. There was no underlying medical problem – the difficulty was functional. Hypnosis is an excellent way to treat functional neurological issues.
Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a medical condition in which there is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system and how the brain and body sends and/or receives signals, rather than a structural disease process. For example, psychogenic seizures are functional (there is nothing to see on an MRI), while epileptic seizures are structural (the problem shows up on an MRI).

This quick fun presentation focuses on using the first session to stir the client’s creativity to give you the information you need for your entire course of work with that client. Since Freud many approaches to both hypnotherapy and psychotherapy focus on the past, discovering how things went off the rails, and cultivating client insight. Milton Erickson recognized the truth, that insight is not necessary for change. It’s time to really let go of the past and see clear ways to move forward.

Speechless for Six Months

November 2, 2018, London, England

Dr. Mau spoke on Speechless for Six Months: Hypnosis for Conversion Disorders and Body Effects.

Note: Conversion disorder is an older and alternate name for functional neurological disorder. It is not related to so-called “conversion therapy,” which is an unethical approach used to attempt to change an individual’s gender identity or sexual orientation. Although conversion disorder is still acceptable terminology in the DSM-5, I am using functional neurological disorder going forward to distinguish this from unrelated and unethical practices which share a similar and confusing name. A functional neurological disorder is a condition in which clients experience neurological symptoms where a physiological cause cannot be identified. Functional neurological disorders are contrasted with structural neurological disorders or organic brain syndromes where a medical basis for the symptoms can be identified. Examples would be epileptic seizures which have a physical neurological cause identifiable with MRI verses psychogenic seizures, where no physical cause can be identified. Functional neurological issues are not related to gender identity or sexual orientation.

Dr. Mau also participated in a panel discussion at the UK Hypnosis Convention.
