Superhero Regression: The Active Wiser You

Dr. Mau will present a two hour breakout session.
What if the ways we think about hypnotic regression, and the expectations we create for our clients for this process, are really focused backwards when they can be powerfully focused forward?

Regression is a fantastic way to address trauma, but does it have to be problem-focused? This fun, substantive, interactive workshop will explore fresh solution-focused approaches to a tried-and-true hypnotic technique, and open your eyes to new ways to engage your client’s active superhero creativity and self-healing.

Traumatic or anxiety disorders engage the same neurological functionality as high hypnotic suggestibility. While talking about trauma in waking state tends to reinforce emotions of horror – usually a bad idea – dealing with them in relaxed state takes advantage of the brain’s function to mute out emotions of horror.

Your First Session: Seeking Solutions, not Finding Problems

Dr. Mau will present a 45 minute breakout session.
Your client’s healing does not lie in their history! This quick fun presentation focuses on using the first session to stir the client’s creativity to give you the information you need for your entire course of work with that client. Since Freud many approaches to both hypnotherapy and psychotherapy focus on the past, discovering how things went off the rails, and cultivating client insight. Milton Erickson recognized the truth, that insight is not necessary for change. It’s time to really let go of the past and see clear ways to move forward.

300 Milliseconds: The Nature of Hypnosis and the Failure of Cognitive Change

Dr. Mau will present a one hour breakout session.

Cognitive processing by the brain’s frontal lobe is extremely fast, and can handle a lot of information, but it is not as fast or vast as limbic system processing. The limbic system, in the midbrain, is in charge of stress, anxiety, and survival. This system processes vast amounts of sensory or perceptual information very quickly, much more rapidly than neocortex cognitive processing. Hypnosis directly engages this emotional, limbic system processing. While cognitive therapies can help people manage problems, hypnotherapy can create changes at emotional, sensory, and experiential levels so that the problems do not happen. For this reason hypnosis is neurologically better suited, faster, and much more effective in treating trauma, anxiety and depression, functional neurological (body symptom), and physical pain issues.

Hypnotic Technology for Pain Relief at Home:

Virtual Reality Assisted Guided Imagery (VR-AGI) for Patients with Advanced Cancer

Dr. Fredric Mau and Dr. Teny Gomez, MD, PI, will describe the first-ever randomized controlled human trial of virtual reality assisted guided imagery in a home setting. This process uses three hypnotic metaphors based on seasons to create numbness, alter pain perception by altering the associated learning channel, and reduce pain via reducing general anxiety. The goal is not mere distraction for a brief interval, but to diminish the patient’s ongoing perception of pain.
