Leaving the 19th Century: Contemporary Language and the Neuroscience of Hypnosis

Dr. Mau will present three and a half hour workshop

Advancements in neuroscience have opened up entirely new ways of understanding the process of hypnosis. A lot of the language we use to understand and describe hypnosis is not wrong, but is imprecise and based on experiential observations from before the advent of neuroimaging. Describing hypnosis using the latest findings and current terminology improves our understanding of our own process, increases our ability to be taken seriously by medical and mental health professionals, and makes our work more effective because it improves our client’s understanding of how our processes help them.

Dissociative Confusion and the Creation of Meaning: Sorting out Hypnosis, Mindfulness, Psychedelics and Such

There are questions to be answered – there seems to be confusion about the distinctions between mindfulness, hypnosis, meditation, and contemplation and about how they are practiced. For example, the use of hypnotic induction in mindfulness exercises occurs with increasing frequency. How should these tools be utilized in clinical practice and what is the current understanding of how they work? Does psilocybin work by inducing a dissociative phenomenon similar to hypnosis?

Nine Ethical Values of Master Therapists

Studying best practices can involve studying the best practitioners. A snowball sampling approach was used to identify a group of 10 therapists – holding a variety of licenses – identified by their professional peers as “master therapists.” This presentation focuses on the ethical commitments of these “best of the best” therapists.

Re-Visioning the Past: Solution-Focused Regression and Memory Reconsolidation to Treat Trauma

Problem-focused therapies focus on recalling past experiences to gain insight, however recent literature indicates this is not as therapeutically important as changing the current narratives about past happenings. Memory reconsolidation provides a powerful model to reactivate old memories and engage in new emotional experiences to create a new way of behaving and experiencing the world, and hypnosis is an excellent way to engage this process.

Envisioning the Future: Embracing Solution-Focused Treatment, Planning, and Motivation

Solution-focused therapies provide a distinct approach which is substantively different from both past- oriented therapeutic approaches and psychoeducation. This session is designed to draw a sharp contrast between problem- and solution-focused approaches, with a goal of empowering clients to build motivation for change and to release hypnotherapists from the heavy burden of the past.

The Use of Hypnosis as a Therapeutic Tool

Dr. Mau will present at the SC Psychological Association Annual Conference –

Hypnosis is the oldest Western conceptualization of psychotherapy, and is recognized as a standard of care process. Division 30 of the APA is devoted to exchanging scientific information, advancing appropriate teaching and research, and developing high standards for the practice of hypnotherapy. Neuroimaging has opened up our understanding of how dissociative therapeutic processes function, and provides us with a model for aligning these processes with many DSM-5-TR diagnoses. Hypnosis offers a methodology to change client experience and eliminate many symptoms, rather than simply managing these symptoms. Dr. Mau will present an overview of the nature of hypnosis and its uses as in psychotherapy.

And how does dissociation and confusion contribute to change thinking and creating new meanings in your life?

Epigenetics: Nurture, Nature, Change, and Hope

Dr. Mau will give a two hour presentation. Behaviors and emotional orientation can be physically inherited. This soft inheritance is not via genetic changes; epigenetics refers to heritable chemical modifications to DNA that alter gene activity without changing nucleotide sequence. Your clients may believe that they have inherited a family curse like trauma or addiction. The good news that, unlike genetic inheritance, epigenetic inheritances are not destiny can be changed. We will review the current state of behavioral epigenetics with a focus on ways to help and encourage your clients as they create change.

Superhero Regression—The Active Wiser You

Dr. Mau will present a two hour workshop.

What if the ways we think about hypnotic regression, and the expectations we create for our clients for this process, are really focused backwards when they can be powerfully focused forward? This fun, substantive, interactive workshop will explore fresh solution-focused approaches to a tried-and-true hypnotic technique, and open your eyes to new ways to engage your client’s active superhero creativity and self-healing.
