More training opportunities.
1. Learn about technologies for counseling over distance.
2. Provide an overview of efficacy, ethical, and regulatory considerations for distance counseling.
3. Consider the implications of technology in face-to-face counseling.
4. Consideration of the implications of communication technologies on client interpersonal issues.
Electronic communications are dramatically changing the way people interact with each other, as well as ways in which people create, develop, and maintain relationships. People are becoming more and more proficient at interacting through a variety of media, including social networks (like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Pinterest, Instagram), email, webcam (like Skype), telephone (including technologies like Facetime), virtual reality sites (like Second Life) including online games (such as World of Warcraft), and text and instant messaging (including Snapchat and WhatsApp).
Technology creates new opportunities for counseling beyond face-to-face counseling. Although large studies and meta-studies have indicated that these modalities can be as effective or even more effective than traditional face-to-face counseling (Godleski, Darkins, and Peters, 2012; Barak, et al., 2008), ethical and regulatory considerations have not necessarily adapted to the opportunities and challenges created by current technologies.
These technologies also create the potential for new client difficulties, including cyber stalking (which can even be a problem in face-to-face counseling sessions), cyber bullying, virtual affairs, sexting, and chexting.
This workshop provides practical information on how to offer distance counseling, and provides an overview of counseling issues related to technology.
